For the past couple of years, I’ve been listening to Future’s newer projects, and don’t get me wrong, they’re solid. But something feels… off. There’s a certain energy missing, a spark that used to make every track pop in a way that’s hard to describe but impossible to forget. Lately, I’ve found myself revisiting his older catalog, and everything suddenly became clear. Future’s golden era? It was when DJ Esco was in charge of the soundboard.
Think back to 56 Nights, Dirty Sprite 2, and Purple Reign. These weren’t just mixtapes or albums—they were moments. Era-defining projects where Future was untouchable. And at the heart of that run? DJ Esco, the man who wasn’t just producing beats but creating an entire ethos. Esco always knew how to craft a backdrop that perfectly complemented Future’s raw emotion, making his music feel like a soundtrack for every mood, from late-night drives to turn-up anthems.
Compare that era to Future’s more recent work with Metro Boomin. Now, Metro is undeniably a heavyweight producer, no question. He’s given us countless unforgettable tracks. But when he links up with Future, something doesn’t hit quite the same. The chemistry feels a bit more predictable, almost repetitive at times. Metro’s sound leans heavily on moody, atmospheric beats that, while great, often fail to push Future into that signature pocket where he truly shines.
This is where DJ Esco thrives. He doesn’t box Future in. Instead, he builds landscapes for him to explore. Esco’s beats are textured, experimental, and unpredictable, allowing Future to go from vulnerable crooner to savage trap king, often all within the same project. Together, they create a vibe that simply stands apart.
Now that these two are reportedly back in the lab, there’s hope we’ll see the return of that magic. What they gave us during their initial run was a movement, not just music. If Esco and Future’s reunion brings even a glimpse of that raw chemistry, we’re in for something special.
The streets are watching. The culture is waiting. And I’m betting on DJ Esco to bring out the best in Future once again.
