Is Big Sean the Devin Booker of Rap? Here’s the Case

Big Sean and Devin Booker both possess superstar-level talent, yet often get overlooked in “Top 5” conversations. This piece dives into the parallels between an NBA standout and a hip hop heavyweight—two elite performers still chasing their defining moments. It’s not about talent. It’s about timing, choices, and consistency.
Detroit-native and Rapper, Big Sean

When you think about Devin Booker, you see a ballplayer with all the makings of an NBA legend. He’s got the stats, the skills, the flair, and the big-game moments. But when the conversation shifts to the best in the league, somehow his name doesn’t sit alongside LeBron, Curry, or Durant. Does that sound familiar? Because it’s the same lane Big Sean has driven down in hip hop.

Big Sean is, without a doubt, one of the most talented rappers of his generation. His cadences, punchlines, and breath control can run circles around most of his peers. Tracks like “Dark Sky Paradise” showcase his lyrical dexterity, while songs like “I Don’t F with You” prove he’s got mainstream appeal on lock. But despite the moments, the accolades, and the stats, Big Sean’s name rarely cracks the Top 5 when people debate the greats in hip hop. And much like Devin Booker, the reason isn’t talent; it’s a matter of choices and consistency.

Big Sean had the tools to be the guy. From the co-signs of Kanye West and GOOD Music to his ability to create songs that dominate charts and resonate with hip hop purists, he was positioned for greatness. Yet, somewhere along the way, decisions about his musical direction, label issues, and occasionally lackluster projects stymied the momentum that could’ve put him on a different level.

Still in the Game: The Power of Potential and Persistence

This isn’t to say Big Sean hasn’t worked. He absolutely deserves respect. Albums like Detroit 2 showed flashes of someone who knew his potential but didn’t maximize it often enough to dominate the conversation. And this is where the Booker comparisons connect. Both have elite talent, impressive careers, undeniable highlights, but their narratives lack that unforgettable championship moment to crown them the best in their field.

But here’s the silver lining. Just like Booker could be a future Hall of Famer without a ring, Big Sean’s discography and cultural contributions put him in hip hop’s Hall of Fame conversation. His position in the game may not be alongside Kendrick, Drake, or Cole in the “greatest of the time” debates, but his impact is undeniable. Sometimes the accolades come from the grind and the stats, not the No. 1 spot.

Big Sean’s challenge going forward is the same as Devin Booker’s on the court. It’s about being dialed in and maximizing every piece of your God-given talent. The tools are all there. The question is, how does he wield them moving forward?
